Concerns about Education Funds
Representative David Lewis of Harnett County voted against the House version of the state budget on Wednesday, citing his concerns that funds earmarked for education and transportation were not protected. “This budget creates an unsustainable $125 million deficit, expands the size of state government, and continues to allow the practice of raiding Education Funds and the Highway Trust Fund,” Lewis said. “Harnett County’s working families are making tough decisions during these difficult economic times. They are setting priorities and cutting extras out of their family budgets,” Lewis remarked. “Most politicians in Raleigh aren’t willing to make difficult choices. Education and transportation and an efficient government are the keys to getting our economy moving again, and this budget hurts all three of these priorities. In addition, the politicians are creating a massive budget deficit whose bill will come due. We can do better than this,” Lewis concluded.
