David Lewis update
In 2003 when I first sought this Office, I worked hard to make clear that I wanted to protect the good jobs we already have in this state. I am deeply concerned that our economy is heading toward a terrible slow down. I am very afraid that the loss of jobs if Goodyear does choose to move will be devastating to our economy. I was prepared to override the Governor’s veto because I feel a responsibility to protect local jobs. I voted against this new proposal because the new proposal was loaded up with just too many things and the cost of the bill increased by 50% overnight. I further value the council of people who recognized, perhaps well before me, that Goodyear’s decision to move from Fayetteville and take the good jobs it provides really will be made with or without this incentive. I further recognize that additional companies will now come to ask for incentives to “stay” in North Carolina. We can’t afford to grant all the requests and so we should invest in infrastructure and across the board tax relief. I thank everyone who wrote to me with constructive advice and look forward to hearing from you again, soon. David
